GES Exterior Cleaning Ltd was called in to carry out a full soft-wash roof clean on a large detached home in Frimley Green, Surrey. The property is a modern, well-built house in red brick with clay tiled roofs, gabled elevations, a projecting dormer and rooflights, set in open grounds backing directly onto woodland. That open, exposed position is a real factor: prevailing wet weather, shelter from the treeline and consistently damp air had allowed algae and lichen to colonise every roof elevation. The tiles had gone from terracotta to near-black, and from the garden the roof was the one thing dragging down the appearance of an otherwise smart property.
Our goal was to bring the roof back to its original colour safely, across a large surface area spanning several pitches and levels. Because the tiles were in sound condition, nothing aggressive was needed or wanted: high pressure would have stripped the surface and created problems where none existed. Instead our technicians worked elevation by elevation with a professional soft-wash biocide and controlled low-pressure rinsing, protecting the sandstone patio, the bi-fold doors and the surrounding lawn throughout. The finished result restored the full terracotta tone across the whole roof, and the client rang the office afterwards to say how pleased he was, tipped the team on site and left GES a five-star Google review.

The dense black staining was removed from the main gables, the dormer and the rear elevations alike, revealing the original warm clay tone and instantly lifting the look of the whole property.
Using soft washing rather than pressure meant the tiles, laps, flashings and rooflight surrounds were left exactly as they were found: structurally sound, with no stripping, no loosened tiles and no water driven underneath.
Killing the growth at root level, rather than clearing only what was visible, gives the roof real staying power against the damp, wooded conditions that caused the problem in the first place.
