GES Exterior Cleaning Ltd was appointed to carry out a complete roof clean and moss removal on a large detached family home in Cobham, Surrey. The property is a substantial period-style house with clay plain tiles across multiple pitches, hipped dormers, a tile-hung upper elevation and a lower single-storey wing to the rear. Its mature, tree-lined plot is exactly the setting that causes roofs to deteriorate quickly: constant shade, damp still air and a steady fall of leaf litter through autumn. Over the years the tiles had disappeared beneath thick moss beds, spreading lichen colonies and a dark blanket of algae, leaving a roof that read as almost brown-black from the driveway.
The brief was to restore the roof to its original terracotta colour without putting the tiles at risk. Moss on a clay plain tile roof is not just a cosmetic problem: it holds moisture directly against the tile surface, forces its way into the laps, and washes down into gutters and downpipes where it blocks drainage and pushes water back against the fabric of the building. Our technicians combined careful hand removal of the heavy moss growth with a professional-grade soft-wash biocide treatment, killing the remaining spores and lichen at the root. The result was a roof restored to its original colour across every elevation, with drainage running freely again, completed ahead of the winter weather.
The exterior restoration transformed the commercial facility, taking the building from a weathered, moss-covered state back to a bright, pristine condition that reflects the high standards of care provided inside.
With the moss, lichen and algae removed, the warm red tone of the clay plain tiles came back across every pitch, transforming the kerb appeal of the house and complementing the brick and tile-hung elevations beneath.
Because the work was carried out entirely by hand and by soft wash, the roof covering was left structurally untouched, with no stripped surfaces, no dislodged tiles and no water forced under the laps.
Clearing years of moss fall from the gutters and downpipes restored proper water flow away from the building, removing the risk of overflow, damp staining and water tracking down the brickwork.
Treating the growth at the root, rather than simply removing what was visible, keeps the roof clear for far longer and means the property went into the winter months protected rather than holding damp against every tile.
